The events

Reading sometimes emerges from its intimate and silent world to have a little party and inspire new encounters and shared experiences. In various formats, libraries, bookshops, reading centres, associations, schools, universities and others put on unmissable events.

The events

There are numerous reading events in Le Havre.

-          Some are quite new, like the literary festival 'Le Goût des autres', which celebrates cultural diversity and was held for the first time in January 2012. Over 6,000 visitors came to meet a variety of authors, to watch shows for adults and children, attend concerts and take part in the literary banquet. Come along on 27, 28 and 29 January 2013 for the next 'Goût des autres' festival!

-          Other festivals and salons have been going for a little longer like the 'Polar à la plage', which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2012. It is an appealing gathering of authors of detective novels and booksellers at the seaside, with an impressive schedule of rock concerts, theatre pieces and performing arts. http://www.lesancresnoires.com

-          FestiVaLeurE: an annual festival of documentary films centred around a theme (water, transport…) and organised by Isel students under the guidance of Christian Affagard (President of the association ADELE): screenings at ISEL, at multimedia libraries, in cinemas…

-          The 'One book, One reader' shows are held at Magic Mirrors and feature readings of beautiful and striking texts by renowned writers and actors like Hyppolite Girardot, Jacques Gamblin, Jacques Bonnafé and François Morel. When texts are given a new resonance and spoken in bewitching voices in an atmosphere of convivial intimacy, with a professional bookseller overseeing proceedings, reading inhabits us!

-          Encounters with authors and artists: in the libraries of Le Havre, in bookshops, schools, reading centres, universities, music and cultural venues and outdoors too, authors of novels or essays, illustrators, film-makers, musicians, scriptwriters, poets and others sign books, give readings and share experiences with you. You being? Adults, teenagers, children, young explorer and whoever is curious, whatever their passion...

-          The prizes:

  • The Prix Océanes, organised by the La Galerne bookshop in partnership with the town of Le Havre. Many locals take part and meet up each year to share their passion for this prize, which is awarded for a novel and gets the whole town talking! (http://www.lagalerne.fr/etudier/148),
  • The Prix des lecteurs Ancres noires (the association which organises the 'Polar à la plage' festival) is awarded for a novel in this genre.
  • The prix 'Jury Jeunes Lecteurs' organised by the association LIRE in partnership among  others with the national education system and Le Havre's network of municipal libraries (over 6,000 children take part annually).
  • The Prix des Embouquineurs (http://www.lagalerne.fr/etudier/147) at a national level with the participation of many bookshops, including La Galerne, aimed at primary schoolchildren and pupils under the age of 15 at secondary school.
