'Reading in Le Havre' is a multi-faceted public book and reading initiative being overseen by the town authorities. Launched in 2012, it is a plan encompassing a wide range of activities and projects, implemented by many different stakeholders. At the heart of the set-up is a dynamic network of public reading facilities to promote reading in Le Havre today.

The town ofLe Havrelaunched the 'ReadinginLe Havre' plan at the beginning of 2012.  'Readingis an adventure!' The plan is structured around 3 strategic components:

-          A day-to-day adventure: locations of very diverse size and design will facilitate opportunities for enjoying books and reading throughout the town. In the centre, the large library project (at the Niemeyer site) will complement the Bibliothèque Armand Salacrou; in the districts, 5 well-proportioned libraries are ultimately planned, supplemented by 12 convenient and convivial reading centres; places for picking up 'nomad books', which can be read in situ or taken away, are being established everywhere. A web portal now enables people to access libraries from their homes, while 'Domicilivre' will organise the home delivery of books to individuals with mobility issues.

-          An adventure at any age: reading is for life! Through a strong partnership with the national education system, the aim is develop a taste and a habit for reading both in school and outside. 'Reading outdoors' in summer, 'reading together' throughout the year, and a whole range of partnerships with crèches, retirement homes, associations and institutions of all kinds will enable people from all walks of life to master or to rediscover language, reading and writing.

-          An adventure to be shared: 'Le Goût des autres' (The Taste of Others), an annual literary festival centred around cultural diversity which plays host to authors, musicians, illustrators, actors and associations, is one of the highlights for everybody! The 'One book, one reader' public readings by well-known writers and actors, the presence of authors in residence in the town and writing workshops are among the other adventures to be lived and shared.

Le Havre's public reading network has expanded and modernised since the Noughties and is continuing to evolve. The libraries and reading centres are public facilities par excellence, accessible to everyone for reading inLe Havretoday.
